What is PoNSTM?

The PoNSTM (short for Portable Neuromodulation Stimulator) is an innovative medical device that delivers mild electrical stimulation to the nerves of the tongue.  These nerves connect to nerves in the brainstem, an area of the brain that controls balance and gait, among other important functions.

How Does PoNSTM Work?

When the PoNS™ device is on, the mild impulses to the tongue stimulate the cranial nerves that have direct connections into the brain through the brain stem, the part of the brain that controls posture and balance, along with other important functions.  When the stimulation is combined with theraputic activities, changes to these connections of the brain may occur. Training with PoNS™ can help to strengthen the pathways and facilitate the recovery of function, which may result in improvements of balance and gait. Balance and gait training are part of the PoNS Treatment™ program, performed with the help of a Certified PoNS™ Trainer during the 14-week program.

1. Tongue Stimulation
  • Receives electrical stimulation
2. Cranial Nerves
  • Cranial Nerve V (or trigeminal nerve) – detects sensation in the face and responsible for biting and chewing
  • Cranial Nerve VII (or facial nerve) – detects taste sensations and controls facial expression
3. Brain and brain stem
  • Communicates and controls posture and balance (also known as the pons Varolii and cerebellum)
4. Neuroplasticity
  • Neuroplasticity may occur as a result of the targeted therapeutic activities and the stimulation from the PoNS™ device
